Just In Time For Christmas

E ntertaining has always been at the forefront of Ruth Pretty’s life. Whether your occasion is a celebration, a summer barbecue, a cosy winter fire-side meal, a posh affair or simply drinks and nibbles, you will find plenty of recipes to delight and impress your guests and create special memories in Ruth Pretty Entertains.

Ruth turned naturally to an entertaining theme for her fifth and latest book, Ruth Pretty Entertains. Her rationale... “There are so many occasions to celebrate. People who love good food embrace life and will find this a reason, as much as designated days, for festivity. Sharing food at a table is also sharing joie de vivre, bonhomie and spirituality. Raise a glass to celebrate life and be thankful that you have been given an entitlement to bountiful food.”

Leading New Zealand chef, caterer, teacher, food columnist and author

Ruth Pretty is well known for fresh, delicious, imaginative New Zealand

cuisine. Ruth Pretty Catering and the associated Cooking School are

based at Ruth’s rural property, Springfield , in Te Horo on the Kapiti

Coast. Since 1999 Ruth has published four successful cookbooks; most

'Ohinemuri Winery and Restaurant is very pleased to have Shona Laing and Monique Rhodes performing on the evenings of 7 th , 8 th and 9 th of November.

Shona Laing is no stranger to New Zealand audiences. Her highly distinctive sound and thought provoking lyrics have made her one of the greatest female artists to come out of New Zealand . Monique , New Zealand born, has been working in Europe for some years.  She has supported rock and roll legend Chuck Berry on two recent European tours, has been writing and recording with members of Peter Gabriel’s band in London and has been writing music for the producers of the highest selling DVD in the USA, The Secret.  She has just recently performed for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in France .

- WHATS ON IN THE SOUTH -

New tastes for the New season

'It’s a busy time down in the south at Wai Waterfront Restaurant.  They have just finished a busy winter ski season and if that wasn't enough work they entered their first ever team into Restaurant of the Year at the NZ Culinary Fare.  Bronze medals all around for kitchen and front of house, not too bad for their first time.

So the snow is melting the lake is rising and Wai's chefs are busy planning the summer menu.  This always creates a buzz of excitement around the restaurant with plenty of exciting new flavors to be sampled, e.g. pan-seared scallops with smoked mussel tortellini's finished with almond milk, washed down with a glass of Cloudy Bay sauvy. Bon appetite.

The really big news from the owners of Wai this summer is the opening of their third restaurant Bella Cucina on Brecon Street opposite the Sofitel.

This new venture is based on a Provencal Italian farm house serving rustic Italian styled food using as much locally sourced fresh produce as possible.  Martin Head Chef/Owner has even found himself a local gardener to grow produce for the menu, which will be changing daily, so watch this space.

Summer Sun and Seafood.

Cable Bay Cafe, just 20 minutes north along the coast from Nelson, is reopening on Friday October 10th for the long hot summer.

Overlooking the Cable Bay estuary and Pepin Island , this sheltered, sunny spot specialises in fresh, local seafood, with a few extras.

And it’s just a few minutes walk from the boulder beach at Cable Bay .

Chef’s, Amy and Greg, create the menu according to whatever is freshest in the kitchen, with local cockles and white fish, salmon and squid featuring alongside other tasty options. The wines are all local and the juices and beers are close by; the Atomic coffee is always excellent.

The cafe is set in the historic Cable Station tearooms, which first opened back in the 1920s. The tearooms served the then bustling community which sprang up around the trans-Tasman cable that came ashore here at the time.

There’s a sunny bach feel, outdoor courtyard, kiddies sandpit and cottage garden.
